Organic Baby Gifts

The market for organic baby gifts is huge. Not so long ago, organic gifts were seen as something only "hippies" would seek out. Now, with so many people trying to live a greener lifestyle, natural baby products are readily available most places you find anything baby related. But, shopping for babies is so much fun, you may want to buy it all! Each thing you see is cuter than the last. How do you decide what to purchase? First, choose what kind of gift you are looking for. This will at least narrow your selections.

diapering is a great gift arena. This is one thing you KNOW the baby is going to need - every day. Receiving gifts of diapers can save the parents a lot of money, which is always appreciated. The days of boring cloth diapers and safety pins are long gone. Many choices exist for these great organic baby gifts. You can choose to buy the organic cotton inserts or the fashionable outer diapers, available in great prints, colors, and styles - even tie dyed! You can even choose to purchase a great starter diaper kit which includes everything the new parents will need to get going with green diapering. Diapers may not be the most glamorous of the organic gifts, but definitely one of the most appreciated.

Cloth baby wipes are another great idea. Again, this is something you know the parents will need to use many times a day. By giving cloth wipes, you are helping to save on the massive waste of disposable baby wipes. These organic gifts are great for baby's skin, too. They absorb wetness well enough to eliminate the need for talcum powder, can be washed & dried, and, with water added to them, can completely make wet wipes unnecessary. You can find them in great colors and bundles, making them an appealing gift.

The baby can be covered head to toe in organic cotton baby clothes. Many companies are now making organic clothing, which is great because availability has been greatly increased. You can find such clothes from big box stores to trendy baby boutiques. Organic cotton socks to hats, organic bibs to receiving blankets, sleep sacks, pants... you name it, you can find it - in most any price range. Gift sets are a great way to go, too. They will offer multiple pieces that coordinate together to provide multiple looks for the baby. So, if you're looking for that amazing, adorable outfit, no problem. Clothes are always a great gift.

Perhaps the most fun category to consider when shopping for natural baby products is TOYS! The world is wide open here. You can find toys that encourage motor skills, kitchen sets, walkers, ride ons, workbenches, even playhouses with eco-friendly themes! Many of the natural wood toys are made from rubber wood and feature biodegradable fabrics and water-based, non toxic paints.

With the availability of organic gifts, you should be able to find what you are looking for. Whether you choose a gift of practicality or whimsy, enjoy the experience. Your gift will certainly be appreciated.

Hand Washing Is Up in Public Restrooms in US

I'm Alex Villarreal with the VOA Special English Health Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http Every few years, two groups do a study of how many Americans wash their hands after using the toilet. These groups are the American Society for Microbiology and the American Cleaning Institute, formerly the Soap and Detergent Association. There was good news in the latest study. Researchers found that eighty-five percent of adults washed their hands in public restrooms in August. That was the most since the studies began in nineteen ninety-six. Researchers visited restrooms at a baseball park in Atlanta, Georgia and a science museum and aquarium in Chicago, Illinois. They also visited two train stations in New York City and a large farmers market in San Francisco, California. In all, they observed about six thousand adults. The researchers found that seventy-seven percent of men and ninety-three percent of women washed their hands. That was up from sixty-six percent of men and eighty-eight percent of women in the last study three years ago.The lowest rate of hand washing among men was at Turner Field, home of the Atlanta Braves baseball team. Only sixty-five percent of men washed their hands, compared to all but two percent of women. Chicago and San Francisco had the most hand washers -- eighty-nine percent of adults. Atlanta followed at eighty-two percent. New York had the lowest rate, at seventy-nine percent of the adults observed at Grand Central Terminal and Penn Station ...

Giving the Babysitter a Crash Course in Cloth Diapers

For parents of young children, it's important to hire the services of a babysitter who is skilled with infant care. A sitter must be more vigilant with a smaller child, and especially know how to prepare formula and change diapers. If you have decided to use cloth diapers for your child, you may find your chosen caregiver is reluctant to work with them. Whether it is unfamiliarity with the covers and inserts or worry for making a mess, your babysitter can be put immediately to ease with a short-term course on using cloth. This way, you don't have to worry about keeping disposables on hand when you go out.

When you know you have a date that requires securing a sitter's care for the evening, arrange a time when he or she can come by your home before the job. A day or two beforehand should be sufficient. This gives you time to introduce your sitter - assuming this person is not a close relative or friend who has spent a lot of time in your home - to your baby's environment. Present all the necessities for diapering - the covers and inserts, wipes, and the wet bag - and demonstrate how cloth diapers are essentially no different from disposables. The main difference, as you'll show, is that the covers or all in one diapers are not thrown away but placed in a specialized laundry bag for later cleaning. If you have hired the sitter to come only for a few hours, comfort him/her with the knowledge that laundry is not their concern.

If there is time, and the situation has arisen, allow your sitter to do a test run on your baby while you supervise. You may find this orientation will relieve your sitter of much unfounded worry, and you and your spouse can enjoy your evening. Don't be surprised, either, if you discover the sitter will volunteer for more work!

Washing & Drying Cloth Diapers

Cloth diapers are a great thing to use. They are better for the environment and can save you a lot of money. This article goes over issues surrounding washing and drying cloth diapers and things to consider.

Washing

Traditionally boil washing was the used to wash cloth diapers. This was considered the only way to kill bacteria and is still something many people do, however you can actually get away with washing diapers at 40 degrees. This, however, is not recommended when dealing with newborn babies and the first 6 weeks. In these weeks it is much better to stick to a 60 degree wash. After this time you can then wash at 40 degrees, although it may be a good idea to do a 60 degree wash every so often. Most wraps, however, can only be washed at 40 degrees so if you choose to do a 60 degree wash make sure your wraps aren't in it!

You also have to consider what to use to wash them. You may be using cloth diapers because you don't want chemicals near your baby's skin and thus want to use something eco to wash them in. Eco-balls are a popular choice to use on clothing but from research, AI have discovered that eco balls are not a good choice for dealing with diapers. According to searches on Google, eco balls can potentially damage the diapers.

There are many great eco detergents available but these can be expensive. A better way for you, if you want to save more money, is to use soap nuts. These are placed in a cotton bag and then put in your machine. These are a great way to clean diapers. White vinegar can also be used to help neutralize smells and you can also use tee tree oil for its anti-bacterial properties.

Drying

If you have a concern for stains your best bet will be to dry your diapers outside in sunshine. Sunshine will naturally bleach your diapers and will also deodorize them. If you decide on using a tumble drier be careful as a drier will shorten the lifespan of your diapers. I have found that my cotton diapers have fallen apart fairly quickly as a result of using a drier often and I have had to replace ties often. However I found a drier important because it was the only way I could get them to be soft and also I live in the UK and the weather is never good enough to dry my diapers quickly.

If you have problems with getting your diapers soft but don't want the drier to damage them, you could compromise and half dry them on the line and then put them in the drier for a shorter period of time. Also don't be tempted to use fabric conditioner to soften nappies as fabric conditioner reduces absorbency.

Getting Started With Organic Cloth Diapers

If you are trying to utilize organic cloth diapers on a full time basis, then you will need at least twelve to eighteen cloth diapers on a daily basis. In addition you may need waterproof covers. However, separate covers need not to be changed unless they get dirty. So you may need about three covers in a day. However, you need to have some extras in order to be on the safe side.

If you are thinking of utilizing a cloth diaper for a newborn all the time from its first day, it is best recommended that you should start buying ahead of time so that you will have everything ready as soon as your baby comes home.  It is alright if you initialize your investment with a small assortment before you buy a big amount of organic cloth diapers. You can try utilizing organic cloth diapers at daytime, and as the days pass by, you can stretch your usage during night time as soon as you get used to utilizing organic cloth diapers.

If you are planning to start full-time but don't have the means to purchase two to three days worth of organic cloth diapers, you can result in buying cheaper alternatives. You can also wash the diaper on a daily basis. You just have to bear in mind that every time you utilize an organic cloth diaper, you are practically banking your savings. You are also helping the environment, and decreasing your baby's exposure to hazardous waste.

You are also going to need containers for used cloth diapers. You also need to have pail liner, which is basically made of the same material like those of the covers. This will ensure cleanliness in your container for used diapers. These liners can also be washed with the cloth diapers. A wet bag is also needed just like the pail liner. A large Ziploc is appropriate, but not nearly as durable as the wet bags on the market. A diaper sprayer is also essential because it simply removes poop from the used diapers in a fast and efficient manner. The snappi, which is considered to be a great innovation practically, holds an organic cloth diaper in location with small plastic teeth in replacement of pins.

All the innovations are worth the use. Manifestations of comfort and efficiency are practiced on these things. However, if you want to be resourceful, you can use plastic grocery bags to store your cloth diapers.

Potty Training Tip - Cinderella Does Not Like to Get Wet

The last 5 years have been great as far as changing diapers, spending money on diapers and cleaning up dirty diapers! That is due to my youngest child finally moving to regular underwear! Back then, one of the most popular potty training books my friends and I used was 'Toilet Training In Less Than A Day' by Nathan Azrin. Many of my friends have had great success with this book. I also picked up a few other ideas along the way. Below are my favorite tips for potty training a toddler.

Potty training should start when your child is truly ready in all three areas: physical, mental and social. Your child must have the physical ability to perform the steps involved. They should understand how the body works and know the clues. Also, they should have the desire to learn.

Once you have a potty chair, and you are sure your child understands moving from diapers into underwear, ask them to bring you their favorite "lovey" or stuffed animal. Have them teach their "baby" first. This assures that they understand the process and are ready to move forward. If they have a hard time with this, you may want to put it off, but if they are willing to try, go ahead with the thought of introducing it to them.

The basics of the one day training was to set aside one full day that you can teach your child without interruptions. I explained that they were showing signs of being ready and were old enough to move into regular (big girl/boy) underwear. I gave my daughter some lightly salted popcorn and her first coke and explained that these would help us with our potty training for ONE day! Some smart kids may decide to prolong it for a few more days just to get these treats! I had her sit on the potty for 10 minutes and kept her entertained with books, cards, coloring etc. After 10 minutes she could eat some popcorn, drink her soda and play for about 10 minutes. We kept her out of diapers, pull-ups or underwear during this time, yes that means bottom half is out in the open. Then we started over again, sit on the potty for 10 minutes and then we increased the time off the potty about 5 to 10 minutes each time. So you would start off with 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off, 10 minutes on, 15 minutes off, 10 minutes on, 20 minutes off, etc. Continuing to fill them up with her snack which would make them thirsty, the more they drank the more opportunities you gave them to practice. You can use any snack or drink, but these were my preference for this special day!

Once you have introduced potty training, buy several pairs of underwear with your child's favorite character. Wrap them up in some fun paper or present them in a special way. Let your child know that they have had some success potty training and they are now ready for underwear with their favorite character on them. Then after they model them and put them on and you clap and make a big deal about it, inform them that Cinderella (replace with favorite character name) doesn't like to get wet or dirty. So, as soon as you need to go to the bathroom, don't forget, run quickly to keep them dry and clean. A few of my friends tried this when they knew their kids were ready, understood and were still too busy playing to take care of business. If they do have an accident, you could try this note (or email)...

Dear (child's name),

I am so proud of you for learning how to use the potty! I am also glad you got some underwear with my picture on it. Try to remember to tell your parents as soon as you feel the urge and then go to the restroom. Please remember that I don't like to get wet or dirty and I love it when I stay dry!

We all have accidents sometimes and if you do, please tell your parents right away! They won't be mad and then they can wash them quickly, clean me up and you can wear them again.

I am proud of you!

(sign characters name)

Remember each child develops differently. An age range could be anywhere from 18 months to 3 years. By 4, most kids are completely independent.

If you start and realize your child is not ready, try again in a few months.

You can't make your child complete potty training until they are ready. You can start the training but they decide when it ends. This is not a battle and if it starts to head in that direction, put it off.

Toilet training usually cannot be accomplished in one day. You can accomplish a lot and get the basics down but expect accidents to happen and be prepared in case they do.

Have an extra set of clothing, a plastic bag to put wet clothes in and some wet wipes available nearby when you are out. Do not yell, punish or criticize when they have an accident.

Use positive reinforcement. Point out how proud you are when they make it to the bathroom.

Bedwetting is normal. For both kids the nighttime took much longer. We used night pull ups at bedtime and would try a few nights in a row every couple of months.

Nighttime dryness is achieved only when a child's body is developed. You can't "teach" this because it is not a skill. I know many boys that continued to wear night pull ups until the age of 7 and 8. I asked our pediatrician about this and they recommended to bring it up to the doctor to rule out any problems but that some kids may not develop this ability until later.

I'm Ready For Potty Training!

Ready to get rid of the diapers and jump into the big kid world? Oh yes, I'm talking about potty training. This can be the most joyous and frustrating time with your child. The best way to approach is with patience and understanding. The most important thing to know is that potty training happens when the child is ready. Most children aren't ready to around 2 years old. If you start too early then the process may take longer then expected, so you have to ask yourself "Is my child ready for potty training?". Here are some help questions from mayoclinic.com to find out if you child is ready:

Does your child seem interested in the potty chair or toilet, or in wearing underwear?

Can your child understand and follow basic directions?

Can your child ask simple questions?

Does your child stay dry for periods of two hours or longer during the day?

Does he or she wake for naps dry? -Does you child have fairly predictable bowel movements?

Does your child tell you when he or she need to potty or poop?

Is your child uncomfortable in wet or diapers?

Can you child pull down his or her pants and pull them up again?

As a parent, both boy and girl, I can tell this is a challenge. Also it was very different potty training my son and daughter. My son could care less if he was wet, dry, or if he pooped. I would always ask him does he need to go potty and I got the same answer every time "no". Then one day I notice him in the corner going potty in his pull up. He would not go to the bathroom, but he would go in the corner. So I decided to put the potty chair in the corner where the magic was happening. I realize that he wanted to be alone but in a familiar place. Eventually I started moving the potty chair closer and closer to that bathroom until finally one day his dad said try the big boy chair (the toilet). He was excited because he felt his was a big boy and that the potty chair was not his anymore.

Now when it was time to start potty training my daughter it went smoother than with my son. She did not like to be wet at all, if she went potty in her diaper she would take it off. I knew right then it was her turn. So I would sit her on the potty chair and she did not like that, she wanted to go to the bathroom like her big brother. The problem is that she would not poop on the toilet, but she would still take the diaper off. So I had to do the reward system with her. If she potty on the toilet she would get 1 piece of candy and if she would poop on the toilet then she would get 2 pieces of candy. That worked out great because I don't give my kids candy often so she loved it. Here are some more tips from www.mayoclinic.com.

Pull out the equipment

Schedule potty breaks

Get there - fast

Consider incentives

Be consistent

Ditch the diapers

Treat mistakes lightly

Know when to call it quits

Potty Training Readiness - Is Your Child Ready to Ditch Diapers?

It is a magical moment the first time the thought crosses your mind that your toddler may be ready to be potty trained.

Imagine! No more diapers!

Before you get too far in this fantasy, you'll want to check with reality and determine if your child is truly ready to begin toilet training. Why is this important? Not checking for potty training readiness signs before starting toilet training is probably the biggest mistake parents make concerning potty training.

If your child is not physically and emotionally ready to train, you will be setting up both you and your child for frustration and disappointment. And possibly delaying completion of training for weeks, months, even years.

I know. This happened to me when training my first child. He wasn't ready but I was! What I learned is potty training is not about the parent's convenience, it's about the toddler and his needs.

Let's look at some common potty training readiness signs you can look for in your child.

- Nap time dryness.

Does your toddler ever wake up from a nap dry? If so, this is an excellent readiness sign. To be ready for toilet training, your toddler will need to be able to hold her urine for at least two hours; longer is even better.

By the way, most of the time, urine training comes before bowel movement mastery. There are exceptions, of course, but often that's the way it works for kids.

Try taking your child to the potty right after those dry naps. If you can catch his potty in the potty chair, you'll help him get the idea.

- Asking to be changed.

Does your toddler ask to have her diaper changed when wet or soiled? Does she seem uncomfortable in wet diapers? Do you ever find her removing her used diaper?

All of these are readiness signs. Take note of how often they occur and how regularly. (See my author's resource box for a potty readiness log you can use.) See if you can identify your toddler's physical and facial cues before wetting or soiling. This information will help you get her on the potty at the appropriate times.

- Being cooperative.

Does your toddler genuinely want to please you? Your child will need to be in a mostly cooperative mood to train well.

This is a tricky readiness sign. After all, toddlers are not known to be cooperative people! If your child is truly belligerent or stubborn, you'll want to improve upon that before potty training.

Also take a look at the level of stress in your home. If it's too chaotic or undergoing tremendous change, it is best to put off toilet training until things calm down.

- Big boys and big girls.

Is your toddler excited to be growing up? Is that a favorite topic of conversation? He'll need to be eager to "be a big boy" to be ready to potty train.

This is an area you can definitely work to your advantage. If you've got an independent soul who wants to do everything "by myself", you can let him know repeatedly that you've got the perfect task for him to do - all by himself.

It's called potty training.

In summary, this is not an exhaustive list of potty training readiness cues, but it will get you started.

Take note of your child in relation to this list for a couple of weeks. If several of these signs are regular and consistent, you probably have a child ready to be trained. The more readiness cues your toddler displays, the better.

Be excited when talking to your child about these signs so she can catch your enthusiasm about the potty training process. Do your research, gather your supplies and clear your schedule for your initial toilet training event.

And yes, it is time for you to get excited. Your child is getting ready to leave diapers behind!

Cocoa Giraffe Hobo Sack - OiOi Diaper Bags Review

When you see a beautiful woman walking down the street, in an elegantly tailored silk suit, to die for shoes and a hand bag in this striking cocoa giraffe pattern, do you instantly think oh, that's a diaper bag, or do you think what a beautiful woman, I wonder where she got that fabulous bag? Any woman carrying OiOi diaper Bags fits into the fabulous category. The most popular designer baby bags in Australia, they have a prestige and class unto themselves that make mommies confident and feel good. The Cocoa Giraffe Hobo Sack is a stunning example of the excellent craftsmanship and superior designs created by Lisa Bennetts, mother of all OiOi diaper bags.

Cocoa Giraffe Hobo Sack: Style

The Hobo Sack is sister to its older sibling, the Hobo. One of the most popular of all the OiOi diaper bags, the Hobo is a practical and elegant bag, perfectly suited for a Mommy with lots of responsibilities in the office and elsewhere. The Hobo Sack is a little less defined, more rounded, and unstructured; fabulous for stuffing anything and everything except maybe the laptop. The Hobo Sack is for running away to the zoo, the park, the ocean and perhaps a luncheon or garden party. The Hobo has a sleek appeal and the Hobo Sack is built for service and for fun. Of all the Hobo Sack designs, the Cocoa Giraffe is the most versatile for running in between the board room and the nursery room. The dynamic burnt sienna nylon lining and coordinating accessories add passion to the fabulous styling.

OiOi Diaper Bags: Functionality

Lisa Bennetts genius reigns supreme. As a mother, she understands the basic needs of a mother: look good, no fail functionality, and not necessarily in that order. A Mom on the go means she is juggling at least 5 things at once. In Angelina Jolie's case, she is managing at least 9 things, outside of her own, personal, day. The cell phone must be easy to access, hence two external slip pockets, no buckles or zippers to contend with when your hands are full of six children, shopping bags, drink cups and your agent on the cell saying that you must respond immediately to the request from the White House.

And when your youngest adds to the mix by wailing, "Mommy, Mommy! Thirsty Mommy..." are you going to be happy that you have to unzip the bag slung across your back and dig inside the depths for the sippy cup? Once you get to the car, you pretty much feel that you can put a few things down, but you are still talking to the White House and toddlers are agile so since you still don't want to go diving into the depths of your bag, the dual purpose key fob or pacifier clip is one of the godsends for which Cate Blanchette is so appreciative. The open main compartment of your OiOi Diaper bags, with 3 elasticized organizing pockets containing the diapers, towels, burp cloths and extra clothing houses the blankets, toys, soothers, and plush babies with room to spare. Here it is easy to find the insulated bottle holder, the zip top wet purse, large padded microfiber changing pad, and OiOi wipes case. Then you discover the stroller strap and vow that the next excursion will be with a double decker stroller so that you can free up your hands and your back.

I went over to the fridge, grabbed a pickle jar, poured all the pickle juice out, and put all the pickles into a bowl. Then, went back to the TV. I heard clattering in the hall. Please, don't be Nick!! Then the door opened and the brown, sleek boy walked in. "Selena..." his british accent said "Mason..." I stood up "I'm truly sorry, for walking out on you" Mason told me "It's fine" then he wrapped his arms around me I sobbed in his chest. Mason's been my best friend since-like, since we were in diapers. "What happened?" Mason asked as we sat on the couch "My boyfriend hurt me" I whispered "Again?" he asked "Not the same one. His name was Nick... I thought he was the one but he hurt me" I cried "I'm sorry, really. I shouldn't of left you" "It's not your fault" I said "So, what are you doing back here?" "My parents and I moved back... for good" Mason told me "Really? Yay!" I hugged him "Glad your happy" Mason laughed I sat next to him, while clutching my arms around his neck. "What are you watching?" he asked "Just anything" I answered "Well, good-good answer" he laughed "Shut up!" I hit him in the gut "Well, that hurt" Mason said, sarcastically I laughed, softly. Stylish Girls Winter Coats and Jackets

With winter rapidly approaching you may be thinking about purchasing a new winter coat or jacket for your girl. There's some great choice available this year that will not only protect your child from winter chills but will also satisfy their need to look good when out and about or with their friends.

Whatever type of coat you are looking for when you start shopping for a winter coat for your girl you should bear in mind a few things first. Make sure the coat you eventually settle on is ok for the climate you live in. If you get a lot of rainfall then buy a coat that is more waterproof than others. If your climate turns very cold during the winter and you get a lot of snow or chilly winds then buy a coat that offers more protection against the cold. Ok with that out of the way what's available this year in terms of stylish girls winter coats?

Well one type of winter jacket or coat that always looks fashionable is a wool coat. These coats usually come in a three quarter length rather than a full length or waist style jacket and this is more practicle for girls as they can't always cope with full length coats. Wool coats are excellent at keeping out the cold winds of winter and have some great designs. This season you can find wool winter coats both with and without hoods. Again consider your climate as a hood offers excellent protection against not only the rain but also wind. If you really don't want a hood on your wool coat then there are plenty available with detachable hoods so this compromise is the best of both worlds. Wool coats look great with plaid designs on them and are suitable for almost any occasion looking stylish whilst keeping your girl warm.

Another popular style of girls winter coat this season is the quilted coat. These tend to be slightly shorter than most wool coats and end around the waist or hips. A quilted coat will usually cost less than a good quality wool coat but can still be found with stylish prints. Again a lot of quilted girls coats come with hoods, both detachable and fixed, so are great in this respect as well.

If your climate is very wet and there is a lot of rainfall then consider a full raincoat for your girl. These offer excellent protection against the wind and rain but aren't necessarily as stylish as wool or quilted coats. The internet is a great place to see the different styles of raincoat available and a little searching can quickly bring some great choices.
