What Are the Symptoms of Dehydration?

Water is a vital constituent of the body, and sufficient hydration is necessary to allow the bodily functions to operate in a correct manner. More than 70% of our body's weight is been taken by water. Dehydration occurs when the quantities of water taken in is lesser than the amounts of water that are leaving the body.

Dehydration symptoms start from carving for water that is severe thirst and then progress to more dangerous manifestations as the need for the body of water becomes more intense and dire. For an adult, the initial symptoms and signs of mild dehydration starts appearing when 2% of the total fluid in the body is lost. These dehydration symptoms exhibit thirst followed by loss of appetite and dry skin. Dark colored urine may also signify dehydration of the body. A person suffering from dehydration also experiences fatigue and weakness, skin flushing, head rushes and even chills.

As soon as the body looses 10% of its fluid the symptom of dehydration becomes intense and more fatal. Severe dehydration symptoms include vomiting, muscle spasms, shriveled skin and racing pulse. It may also lead to painful urination, abdominal and chest pain and seizures. Severe dehydration may also lead to difficulty in breathing and even unconsciousness.

Dehydration symptoms differ from person to person. This is because the complex systems of the body for each person differ. When these systems of body experience loss of fluid these, they are disturbed and exhibit different responses. The mentioned dehydration symptoms above are the ones most commonly shared by most bodies, but there may be several unexpected or unusual dehydration symptoms depending on each particular person.

Manifestation of different symptoms also depends on the age. Dehydration signs will not same in a child as it is in an elderly, a teenager or an adult.

Dehydration symptoms in children are manifested by initially a dry mouth and tongue. They do not shed tears when they cry while experiencing dehydration. Their abdomen, eyes and cheeks appear sunken. They may also experience high fever with no wet diapers till 3 hours. In case of severe dehydration their skin is also affected. It does not flatten when you pinch and release it. Dehydration is very dangerous for children who can even die from it within a matter of days. Child specialists suggest a rehydration solution like Pedialyte, Ceralyte and Infalyte that are specially intended for children.

In the elderly, dehydration symptoms are a quite different. The main cause for dehydration in the elderly is the medicines they take. One of the most noticeable symptoms of dehydration in the elderly is a poor elasticity of skin. When their skin is pinched, instead of coming back to its normal shape it holds the way pinched.

Although water is an extremely important element of maintain water levels of the body and preventing dehydration but it does not have electrolytes. Fluids containing sodium like broth, soups and soft fruits, fruit juices and vegetables which are rich in potassium help to maintain and restore electrolyte levels. Moreover sports drinks like Gatorade also help in maintaining and restoring the electrolyte levels

Training Pants Review: Potty Patty

LOVE these training paints so far!!! I do wish that they came in cute patterns and different colors but then again once she is dressed it totally doesn't matter. They are not 100% leak proof....they are very much like normal disposable training pants and will hold one or two accidents before they start to leak, however, by that time she has realized that she is wet and has used the potty. And I was wrong they were 24.95 for a 6 pack!!!...which is pretty awesome!!! GIRLS: www.pottypatty.com BOYS: www.pottyscotty.com

Interview with Krystyna Stochowicz Farley, WWII veteran - Polish Army. CCSU VHP.

Interview conducted by Sally Kemmler. Krystyna Stochowicz Farley was a member of the Polish Army under British command from 1943 until 1947. She joined while she was living in Iran, where she was sent after being released from a Russian prison camp. She had to lie about her age in order to join, but the conditions for the soldiers were much better than for the refugees. In basic training they learned how to march and how to shoot, and she eventually became a nurse's aide. Krystyna travelled to a number of places during the war, although she always worked in hospitals. She was stationed in Iran, Iraq, Palestine, Italy, Egypt, and England. Her service ended in England, and she stayed there until moving to the United States.

Potty Training, Parents, and Daycare

Understanding how to use the toilet is a big event in a young child's life. Due to the fact toilet training is a complex process, there are many issues day care providers and families must consider before and throughout the process of toilet training for it to be a successful experience for everyone.

How to tell if a child is ready? The Child:

• Follows simple directions
• has a dry diaper for at least 2 hours during the day.
• Has a dry diaper after nap time.
• Regular bowel movements.
• Is able to pull up and down their clothes without needing assistance.
• Shows signs of not liking to wear dirty or wet diapers
• Seems interested in sitting on the toilet.
• wants to wear big boy or girl underwear.

If the child has mastered most of these skills, then they are most likely ready to start toilet training. If they do not have these skills or have a adverse reaction to toilet training, wait a little longer even a few weeks will make a difference, and then they will probably have most of these skills mastered.

Starting too soon can actually prolong the process and cause tears and frustration. Toilet training is much less difficult when the child is ready. It also helps to have potty training friendly clothes. There's nothing more irritating than seeing a child run to the bathroom to go potty and they have an accident due to the fact it took too long to get their clothes off. Pants are the easiest and of course shorts and dresses make it easy for girls.

A good plan to teach potty training is:

• A calm easy going approach works best.

• Caregivers will learn the words the child's family uses for identifying urinating and a bowel movement, to be consistent with what the child is doing at home. Also consult with family about strategies used at home so the process is consistent.

• Toilet training entails many steps (discussing, undressing, going, wiping, dressing, flushing, hand washing) reinforce the child's success at each step.

• Help children understand the difference between urinating or have a bowel movement. They must be aware of what they are doing before them being able to do anything about it.

• Caregivers should be including toilet training into the daily routine such as story time, singing and games that reinforce the skills needed to toilet train.

•Talk to parents and make sure they understand that dressing children in easy to remove clothing to help children be successful in undressing and dressing.

• When a child is showing the signs of having to use the toilet or wants to use the toilet, take the child in make sure they can pull down there pants by themselves. Sit with the child for a few minutes. Try not to expect immediate results.

The child should only sit for a few minutes at a time, help the child with the rest of the routine and make sure to offer a reward such as a sticker a sticker chart will help your child see his progress, and always praise the child whether they do something in the toilet or just sit on the potty.

• Start by having your child sit for only a minute or two if they are going to do something in the potty they will do it in that amount of time making them sit until they do something will only frustrate them, and this could set up a power struggle and negative feeling toward toilet training.

• Do not make a big deal for accidents. Occasional accidents are going to happen. Always clean up the child immediately after the child has an accident. Be positive and reassuring that they will be prosperous. Punishment does not make the process go faster and may delay it.

Use Cloth Diapers and Conserve Water Too!

Automatic clothes washing machines account for about 20% of total water use in the home. When you use and launder cloth diapers in your home this figure may be a bit higher and in some areas where drought conditions exist, this may present a problem. It is also a source of ammunition for disposable diaper advocates who are always looking to find reasons why using cloth diapers is comparably earth unfriendly. Of course cloth diaper users know that they are acting in the best interests of mother earth but in order to balance things out we can always find ways to cut back on our water usage so that cloth diapers are simply not an issue. The first step you can take to reduce water usage is do use a dry pail method for laundering. Presoaking your diapers in a wet pail is not required to keep them clean and it would help to conserve water by skipping this procedure entirely.

We can also help conserve water by buying an energy efficient washing machine. Traditional top-loading washers use between 32 and 50 gallons per load. Shop for a model that uses less water, and make sure that it has settings for using less water when washing partial loads. If you can afford one of the newer front-loading clothes washers, they are an excellent investment. These machines tumble your clothes through a smaller quantity of water, rather than using an agitator. Most front-loaders today use about 24 gallons per load, or about 40% less water. They also use less energy and detergent, and discharge less water into your sewer pipe. Thus, you can save on your water, sewer, energy, and detergent bills. There are claims that front-loaders are gentler on fabrics, prolonging the life of your clothes.*

One of the most important aspects to consider when washing is to remember to wash full loads as much as possible. If you must wash a partial load, see if your machine allows the water level to be adjusted to fit the size of the wash load. Simply by adjusting the water level to correspond to the load size may easily save as much as 12 gallons per week, especially if many smaller loads are washed.

By following these guidelines you can see a significant difference in your water consumption, enough to make cloth diaper laundering a non issue. But why stop there? Many other water conservation tips can be used to lighten our environmental footprint even less.

Consider these tips:

Use an ultra-low flush (ULF) toilet

If you have an older toilet install an in-tank toilet retrofit device

Install faucet aerators on kitchen and bathroom faucets

Install a low-flow showerhead

Avoid pre-wash and pot scrubbing cycles on your dishwasher, saving 5-8 gallons per wash

Consider installing an instant water heater on your kitchen faucet so you don't have to the let water run in order to heat up

Consider using a non-regenerating water filter as an alternative to a water softener

Turn off the softener when you are on vacation

Use a pool cover and you can save 90 to 95% of the water that would otherwise be lost to evaporation

Use "gray water" collected from clothes washers, bathtubs, showers, and laundry or bathroom sinks to water ornamental plants and lawns, or to irrigate trees

Use gutters and downspouts to catch run-off water from the rain and divert it to your landscaping. Tanks, barrels, and cisterns can also be used for rainwater collection.

You can track the progress of your household's conservation efforts by checking your water meter. Consider setting a weekly target and monitoring your total water use for that period. Investigate how changing your habits or upgrading to water-conserving appliances and hardware affect actual water used. * By using these and other water conservation tips we can help to lighten the impact of cloth diaper laundering on our available water resources and say with certainty that our choice to diaper our children with cloth, is the the most environmentally responsible one.

Bathing Your Newborn Baby

Having a baby is one of the most wonderful experiences any parent could have. However, because of the sensitive body and health condition of an infant, proper procedures of taking care of him should always be considered. This is especially true in giving a bath to a newborn baby.

What are the proper ways of bathing a newborn baby?

There are numerous considerations that should always be employed when bathing a baby. Here are some of the steps to ensure the safety of the child :

The number of times that a newborn baby has to receive a bath depends on his health condition. Daily baths are not necessary for babies who are not yet crawling. As long as you are able to adequately cleanse your infant during diaper change and after meals, you can keep him fresh without actually giving a bath. On the other hand, an ideal of two to three times a week for a bath can keep your baby fresh.

The factor in giving a bath is to have the right tools and things when you are about to give him a cleansing activity. You should always use gentle and mild substances for your newborn. Soaps and shampoos specifically for babies are widely available in the market. Also, utilities such as sponges and soft towels can be purchased.

The first step in bathing your baby is to gently wet him with clean and gently warmed water. You can start wetting the sponge and lather it on his toes, arms and torso. Giving a gentle lathering technique will open his skin pores to make way for a relaxing bath. Never submerged a newborn baby in water, as this may increase the risk of infection as well as drowning.

Next thing for you to do is to put a little bath soap (preferably liquid) on the sponge. Then, you can gently lather the soap suds on the parts of the body previously wet. This will help cleanse out dead skin cells and other skin components from birth.

Afterwards, you can then use another sponge and wet it with warm water. You can cleanse away the soap materials from the infant's body by squeezing out water from a drenched sponge and let the water wash away the suds. This is the gentlest way of removing soap suds from the baby's body. With regards to the head and hair, the same procedure may be followed. Most pediatricians recommend that the head to be the last to be cleansed as this part needs special attention. You should always be careful not to let soap or shampoo to get into the eyes for your baby.

For his face, you can use a damp soft cloth to remove any dirt or dust that has accumulated on his face. It is not advisable to wash a baby's face directly with water, especially for newborn ones. After the bathing process, you can wrap your infant with a clean soft cloth to let it absorb excess water. You can now cuddle and kiss yours with a healthy and refreshed body after giving him a bath.

Stress Management: 7 Universal Laws for Managing Change

1. The Law of Stagnation

This is also known as first order change. First order change is a type of change where there really is no change.

How's that again? Pretty foggy, huh?

Allow me to clear it up for you. Authors Waltzlawick, Weakland and Fisch, in their book "Change: Principles of Problem Formation and Problem Resolution" explain it this way:

"...A person having a nightmare can do many things in their dream - run, hide, fight, scream, jump off a cliff, etc. - but no change from any one of these behaviors to another would ever terminate the nightmare."

In other words, you can have lots of action and moving around, without any real change taking place.

A good example from the relationship world is the belief that ending one relationship for another will change everything and make you happy. Not necessarily. Remember these profound words of wisdom, "Wherever you go, you take yourself with you."

2. The Law of Transformation

This is also known as second order change. Again, according to the authors,

"The one way out of a dream involves a change from dreaming to waking. Waking, obviously, is no longer a part of the dream, but a change to a different state altogether."

In other words, transformation, or put more simply, real change, involves movement from one state to another.

3. The Law of The Clutch

This is also known as the law of conscious attention. Several years ago, the clutch went out on my two year old car. I asked the mechanic why this would happen so soon and he asked me a few questions about how I drive. It turns out I was a champion clutch rider. If it was possible for me to have the clutch in, it was in.

What's the point? Well, I found myself having to pay conscious attention to something I had been doing, kind of unconsciously, for years - driving.

There are times in our life where we have to pay conscious and careful attention to what we are doing and thinking in order to get the changes we want.

4. The Law of Others

Whenever you set out to change someone else, you are doomed to frustration and failure. The only
person we can change is ourselves, and that's difficult enough sometimes.

5. The Law of Wet diapers

The only person who always likes change is a wet baby. Sometimes change can be the last thing we want. At the same time, change is an inevitable part of our lives.

6. The Law of Waves

Like change, there are three ways to handle a wave: you can let it knock you down, you can survive it, or you can ride it and thrive. Only the wisest and most creative of people do the latter.

7. The Law of Kaleidoscopes

Remember the kaleidoscopes we played with as kids? You would look through the hole in the tube, turn the end of the tube and watch the colors change. Many times there would be a series of small shifts followed by a big shift in the picture.

That's often how we change as well. We make a series of small shifts leading to big changes.

So if you find yourself frustrated by only being able to make small changes, remember, big changes can be just one more small shift away.

Breastfeeding Tips

Feeling frazzled trying to breastfeed? You're not alone. Review our tips for success. The first few weeks of breastfeeding can be very challenging for a new mom. Here are a few tips to help you succeed:

* Choose a comfortable place to nurse. Sit back, rest your head and neck, and use a foot rest to enhance your comfort. Comfort is key since you will be in this position for some time.

* Have a glass of water handy and any other item that you may need during this time such as a snack, telephone, or magazine.

* Use a nursing pillow or regular pillow to help position your baby.

* Place your baby in the desired breastfeeding position BEFORE attempting to latch your baby to your breast.

* Make sure that your baby is comfortable in this position.

*When enticing your baby to open his/her mouth, move your nipple from an up-to-down position, stimulating your baby from the nose down to the chin.

* Place some manually expressed breastmilk (or formula if no breastmilk is available) directly onto your nipple to help entice your baby to latch.

* For a sleepy baby, try waking your baby by:

o Rubbing your baby's back along his/her spine.

o Tickling your baby's feet.

o Removing blankets, clothes and hat. Babies love to sleep when they are cozy and warm.

o Wipe your baby's face and chest with a cool, damp cloth.

o Change to a football hold or in an upright position so your baby isn't snuggling into you.

o If all else fails, put your baby near your breasts skin-to-skin with you and give your baby another 30 minutes to an hour to wake up and get hungry. The skin-to-skin contact keeps your baby close to you, smelling your scent and helps to stimulate your milk.

* Breastfeeding may be uncomfortable at the very beginning, but the pain should ease after the first couple of minutes. If it doesn't, your baby may not be latched properly. Take your baby off of the breast, making sure to break his/her seal with your finger first, and then try again.

* A nipple shield may be helpful in assisting your baby to latch in the first week. Once good breastfeeding has been established, stop using the shield.

* Wait to offer a bottle or pacifier until good breastfeeding has been established. Bottles are much easier for babies to remove milk from. This could potentially cause your baby to prefer the easy bottle instead of your breast which is more work.

* Many breastfeeding moms are concerned that their baby is not getting enough milk. It is true that in the first few days, you will only be producing drops of colostrum. Colostrum, although low in quantity, is very high in quality. Colostrum is rich in protein and low in fat and sugar.

* A good guide for assessing adequate intake is if your baby is sleeping 2-3 hours between feeds, is stooling, and is having 6-8 wet diapers a day.

* Keep a chart of the time your baby feed, the length of the feeding, the breast you started with, and if your baby had a wet or poopy diaper. This is especially useful if you have more than one baby.

* You may find it helpful to use a bracelet or similar item to place on the arm that corresponds to the breast that you started your feeding session with.

With patience, practice, and time, breastfeeding your baby will become second nature. Don't give up... you can do it!
